About Us

Jennifer Gwirtz (Founder/Director/Performer)

Jennifer Gwirtz's work emerged from a background in ballet, contemporary dance, technology, Butoh and visual art. The daughter of a voice teacher, she had an early fascination with sound. She developed a passion for blending disciplines while earning her MFA in New Genres at San Francisco Art Institute. She performed with Megan Nicely & Dancers, Mary Armentrout Dance Theater and surrealist playwright/performer Dan Carbone. In the 1990s she created theatrical, movement-based experiments that challenged assumptions about performance for galleries, theaters and outdoor spaces. In 1998 she and John Baumann formed Right Brain Performancelab as a collaborative group for performance experimentation. Her current movement work has been seen in group shows at Performance Art Institute and SOMArts in San Francisco in 2011.
