GYROKINESIS.jpg

The GYROKINESIS® method is an enjoyable, beautifully low-impact, but fully four-dimensional practice for strength, flexibility and integration. It is the perfect daily movement practice for dancers, musicians, athletes and accountants of all ages. The class begins seated on stools, then moves to the floor, progressing through all possible spinal motions: arch, curl, lateral bends, undulations and spirals to relax and massage the organs, create space in the joints, shape and strength in the muscles, ending with a full-body sense of length, resilience and calm.

Mixed-level Pilates Fusion

All levels are welcome.

Pilates is blended with other modalities for a mindful but rigorous practice. The class begins with a slow integration of the core, releasing the sacrum and the spine, moving on to a progressive toning of muscle groups, ending with fun and challenging Pilates exercises! Beginner modifications and advanced variations are offered throughout the class.

Foot To Core

Foot To Core is a barefoot training method that strengthens and energizes the core - the abdominals, the psoas, the pelvic floor and the muscles around the spine - by training and working with the feet (and hands!) using gravity and body-weight resistance.

Imagine being able to relax fully as you walk or run! This method shifts the extra effort to the core where it belongs, allowing for release in the joints resulting in better form, resilience and less impact during walking or running gait.

The class works in a standing posture to find alignment, mobilize the feet, ankles, legs, hips and spine. We will then move to the floor for Pilates- and yoga-based work lying on the back, side and front. The end of the class returns to standing again to end with an energizing integration of all of the practices.

This course can be taught as a multi-level or beginner class.

Deepen and tone abdominal undulations, organize and strengthen your hips and spine, release your hip flexors, move your ribs and lengthen your entire body with the GYROKINESIS® method.

The Gyrokinesis method is an enjoyable, beautifully low-impact, but fully four-dimensional practice. It is the perfect daily movement class for dancers, musicians, athletes and accountants of all ages, and specifically works with the types of movements that belly dancers use. The class begins seated, then moves to the floor, progressing through all possible spinal motions: arch, curl, lateral bends, undulations and spirals to relax and massage the organs, create space in the joints, shape and strength in the muscles, ending with a full-body sense of length, resilience and calm.

About Jennifer Gwirtz

Jennifer is a mother, a performer, a writer and a student of the human body. Originally from Philadelphia, Jen has a masters degree in New Genres Art from San Francisco Art Institute and a bachelors in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis where she also worked as a work-study technician at Edison Theater. She has travelled a long and meandering path through the dance, clowning and underground theater scenes, starting with a professional ballet career and most recently in the Bay Area where she directed Right Brain Performancelab for nearly fifteen years.

Her discovery of Pilates in 1996 ended her decade-long back injury and ignited her curiosity about the workings of the human body. In 2003 she received her Pilates certification from Madeline Black and Jean Sullivan’s Integrated Teacher Training. She maintained a practice in San Francisco and Sausalito for many years. In 2009 she began to study GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® methods. In 2014 she became certified to teach the GYROKINESIS® method of exercise.

During her tenure as Technology Manager and Ergonomic Evaluator for the Department of Philosophy, University of California, Berkeley she began to explore topics about the workplace, how we work and how we move in daily life. She continued this train of thought by delving into Aston Kinetics with Judith Aston and Ronnie Oliver. In 2010 she spent a year of concentrated research and study with Pilates Master Trainer Elizabeth Larkam through a one-on-one mentorship program in which she pursued her interest in how the feet connect to the core.

Jennifer is also passionate about teaching dance movement and facilitating Fieldwork workgroups in which artists bring new work and works-in-progress for showing and feedback. She currently studies and practices Butoh and traditional Egyptian and Turkish Romani dance. She is grateful and honored to be a part of the Body Mechanics community/family!

Testimonials

"Jen's classes have changed my life in so many ways. To quote from Tale of Two Cities, I 'have been recalled to life.' I was a long distance runner and because of back injury and personal losses stopped running. I was feeling very depressed emotionally and about my body.
When I started Jen's pilates classes I was very fragile. Her amazing ability to teach, explain the exercises and always with her amazing personality, I started to feel better and stronger.
It is a joy to see her and I always leave her class feeling positive and stronger. We are fortunate to have her and her talent.
Thank you Jen for all you do."

-Noreen Barrington

"Jen Gwirtz is an excellent Pilates instructor who really knows her stuff. She peppers her classes with interesting tidbits of information that put the different exercises in context. She pays great attention to detail in both group and individual settings and is always caring and empathic. Unlike many other instructors, she is truly concerned with helping people and, most importantly, in making sure they are doing the exercises correctly."

-Polly Collingridge

"I can’t thank Jen enough! I was injured in a fall two months ago and have been to several doctors and had work done. Nothing was helping. After just one session with Jen I slept for the first time in months without any back pain. She is not only a knowledgable and intuitive healer but a gift of compassion."
