What is The Performers'/Artists' Voice?
P/AV is a labor of love, a simple plain-cover chapbook that is distributed wherever people can see it - bookstores, cafes, theaters, etc.
It is a zine in which artists write about each others' work. It is for artists and performers to document their reactions to work that they see. P/AV was created in response to the diminishing arts coverage in our local mainstream periodicals. The Bay Area art scenes are incredibly rich in new work. There are only so many professional reviewers, and more interesting work out there than they can possibly cover.
Issue 5 will go to print some time in January . We have changed to a rolling deadline, and accept work at all times. If you have questions, you can drop us an e-mail at
Who can write for P/AV?
Choreographers, musicians, theater artists, visual artists, writers and people in the various artistic scenes in this town who have something to say about what they're seeing on stages, in galleries, in music halls and in process anywhere in the Bay Area.
The Goals of P/AV
To cover our incredible ferment of local arts from the grass-roots point of view. To offer a service to each other as artists that can create a bridge between different artistic genres and scenes. To reveal the incredible amount of creativity and effort going on in the Bay Area - something that isn't at all obvious in our mainstream local media coverage - and to show that our efforts as artists are more than a ghettoized form of expression. To offer a glance at many different events going on in town to folks who may be too busy or low on cash to go see them.
To really WATCH and ANALYZE work, and to put it on paper. To provide a legitimate source of quotations and impressions that artists can FREELY use in their publicity materials. (Please note that anything in this zine is under a form of copyright in which quotation is allowed without permission, just so long as the author and publication are referenced.)
Guidelines
Go see the show that you want to see, whether it's dance, visual art, music, or some uncategorizable event. (You can't write about your own show.) The work should be by a Bay Area artist. Take notes, save a program, talk to people in the audience or whatever information you need - use your instincts. Write your piece as soon as you can, then edit it to your satisfaction.
Say what you see. Be specific. Give reasons for feelings. (If you say "I liked X," then say WHY.) Remember that these articles/pieces are in support of the artistic communities, even if the writer speaks in a critical voice.
E-mail it to us at the e-mail address above.
Form
ANYTHING. Formal review, analytical essay, first person narrative, five verses of Haiku, cartoons, drawings, crossword puzzles - be creative! We're not trying to recreate the local newspapers or InDance, but to add to what's available. The only limitation is that we have permission to edit for grammar, spelling, or for the guidelines described above.
Copyright
P/AV is covered by a Creative Commons "Attributions-NoDerivs" copyright, in which the work in the zine can be freely quoted, so long as it is not altered and the author/publication is credited. In this way, an artist who finds a great quote in a review can use it in their press materials without having to obtain permission first. At the same time, the author can be assured that they will still get credit for their work and that their words will not be modified in any way.
Donations
We're doing this for free, so any donations you might be able to afford will help us with paper and printing are most welcome. If you can't give cash, donations of laser paper, toner, or time spent distributing is also welcome. Eventually, we'd also love to be able to afford postage. If you send us a 5"x7" SASE with a $0.60 stamp, we'll send one to your home as soon as it's printed.
For questions about donations, just e-mail either John or me at the e-mail address above.
